Introduction
The 5020-0886 Light Meter MS 86 (below mentioned as device referred) measures the Light-Power .
The Auto-off-function allows a long battery life. As with all Instruments the correct use is an essential requirement for accurate measurement results. Read the manual thoroughly before use.
Safety instructions
- Use the device only for purposes for which it is intended.
- The instrument is not a toy. It must be kept out of the hands of children.
- Store the device in a dry place.
- Do not drop the instrument! Protect the instrument against shock or vibrations. Note the storage conditions.
- Do not immerse the instrument into water or other liquids.
- Do not use the device when the instrument or a part of the instrument is damaged. In case of a defect devise please contact your distributor.

Description of the unit
- Photo detector: long life silicon photo diode inside
- MAX and LUX/Fc function button: Press button quickly, the max reading will be displayed. Pressing it once again will release the hold and allow another measurement. Pressing this function button for 2 seconds will change the display between LUX and Fc.
- Power: Turn power ON or OFF.
- LCD Backlight Control: Meter will be will sensitive to environment light intensity, if the environment is dark, it will turn on the LCD backlight on automatically, otherwise it will turn off the LCD backlight.
- Auto-ranging: x10 means the meter is in range 20k Lux, and the readings should multiple with 10; x100 means the meter is in range 40k Lux, and the readings should multiple with 100.

Start-up the unit
Insert the battery
Open the battery cover and insert the 9 volt battery according to the correct polarity.
Power
Press the power button to start normal measurement.
Automatic Power OFF
Meter automatically shuts down after approx. 30 minutes of inactivity (Sleep Mode). To override Auto Power Off function (Non-Sleep Mode), firstly press the MAX/MIN button and hold, then press power button, after the display appears, release both buttons. Icon “ ” will not shown on the LCD. The unit will not auto power off now.
Measurement
- Remove the photo detector to light source in a horizontal position.
- Read the luminance on the LCD display. If the environment is dark, the LCD backlight will automatically turn on.
- The measure range will changed automatically with the light intensity. It includes 200.0 Lux,2000 Lux,20 Klux and 40 Klux 4 ranges for Lux; or 20.0 FC,200 FC,2000 FC,4000 FC 4 ranges for FC correspondingly.
- Press the function button for about 2 second to change the unit between Lux and Fc
- Press the function button quickly to change to the MAX HOLD function. Press once again to release the hold and allow another measurement.
- Over-range: If the instrument display “OL” in the M.S.D. the input signal is too strong
- When the measurement is finished, replace the photo detector from the light source.
- Spectral characteristics of sensitivity: The photo diode with filters applied to the spectral sensitivity does meet CIE (Inter national Commission on Illumination) photopia curve V (ʎ) describes.
- If it appears, battery should be replaced with new one.

Replacing the battery
It is necessary to replace the battery when the battery symbol appears. Open the battery case on the rear side. Insert a new alkaline battery. Connect the battery with the correct polarity with the battery-clip. In order to avoid leaking batteries replace weak batteries asap. In case of leaking batteries use gloves and goggles for personal protection.

Disposal

Disposal of the batteries: Batteries and rechargeable batteries must never be disposed of with household waste. They contain pollutants such as heavy metals, which can be harmful to the environment and human health if disposed of improperly, and valuable raw materials such as iron, zinc, manganese or nickel that can be recovered from waste. As a consumer, you are legally obliged to hand in used batteries and rechargeable batteries for environmentally friendly disposal at retailers or appropriate collection points in accordance with national or local regulations. The return service is free of charge. You can obtain addresses of suitable collection points from your city council or local authority. The names for the heavy metals contained are: Cd = cadmium, Hg = mercury, Pb = lead. Reduce the generation of waste from batteries by using batteries with a longer lifespan or suitable rechargeable batteries. Avoid littering the environment and do not leave batteries or battery-containing electrical and electronic devices lying around carelessly. The separate collection and recycling of batteries and rechargeable batteries make an important contribution to relieving the impact on the environment and avoiding health risks.

Clean it with a soft damp cloth. Do not use solvents or scouring agents.
