The lamp is always “full” on, but you can change the brightness by pulling up on the top handle; for example, you can open it up a quarter of an inch or a third of an inch to the brightness you need.

The brightness of the light is controlled by how far you draw the light out; it does not actually have a dimmer (how much is exposed). In order to see how long the batteries survive, I haven’t left it running.
Although these lanterns are bright and sturdy and probably won’t cause any harm, I wouldn’t leave them in the hot sun. I think they’ll be fine if you put them in the shade. I’d strongly advise bringing these lights to Africa.

No special batteries are required. The battery’s use depends on how often you use it. The battery can last for a very long time because it speaks and closes so easily. Additionally, if you reside in a place that is really cold, I would personally remove the batteries whenever I wasn’t using the lamp.
