Descriptions

The Earthquake Sound SLAPSM8 is an adjustable passive bass radiator that, with no additional amplifier power or enclosure volume, greatly improves subwoofer efficiency and capability for ultra-low frequency reproduction. SLAPS provide up to +6dB of bass compared to standard sealed and ported enclosures, making them the ideal companion to all high-quality long throw woofers now available on the market.
Since SLAPS are user tunable, they can be included into almost any subwoofer/enclosure system. The restrictions of traditional sealed and ported enclosures, which tend to limit excursion, are solved with SLAPS (Symmetrically Loaded Audio Passive System). As its name suggests, SLAPS is symmetrically constructed, setting it apart from conventional or other subpar passive devices currently on the market. The SLAPS suspension design incorporates a dual structure of opposites that are equivalent, giving it identical qualities in both the positive and negative pressure domains. As a result of the pneumatic coupling between SLAPS and an active driver, the efficiency and performance are high. The distinctive and patented architecture of SLAPS enables the active driver to travel without compression, producing a bass response that is deep, dramatic, and powerful.

HOW TO TUNE THE SLAPS-M8

The SLAPS-M8 comes with a ±160g mass preinstalled. We suggest that you carefully remove this mass and adjust it accordingly based on the NET internal volume of your speaker box/enclosure and preferred tuning frequency.

Do take the speaker/driver displacement into considering, On when you calculate the net internal volume of the speaker box/enclosure. For your convenience, we have provided a tuning graph for several different speaker boxes/enclosures.
For example, the net internal volume of your speaker box is 0.523 (15L) and your preferred tuning frequency is 30Hz. You will need to add about 108g of mass to the SLAPS-M8.
If you decide to modify the mass provided, every 1/2ʺ drill hole (±9g) will increase the tuning frequency by 1Hz. additionally; keep the modifications in symmetry to allow even mass distribution.
If you choose to not use the provided mass nor graph, simply go to your neighborhood hardware store and get flat washers with a 5/16ʺ (8mm) inner diameter and a maximum of 2ʺ (52mm) outer diameter. You may need to get multiple washers and try out different quantities to obtain the desired tuning frequency for your system.

FAQ’s

What happens if the enclosure for your subwoofer is too small?

The mechanical limits of the woofer will be simpler to attain as the enclosure size grows. If the box is (reasonably) too small, increase power. The driver will be able to still pound out that bass despite the low volume!

Why is an enclosure necessary for a subwoofer?

To keep the sound from cancelling out with the sound coming from the front of the cone, your car audio subwoofer needs an enclosure. In order to avoid distortion at high drive levels at low frequencies, it also requires an enclosure to control cone motion.

How can I stop the floor from shaking when my subwoofer is on?

Placing the sub on an isolation pad or platform is one method of separating it from the floor. This usually consists of a flat, rigid piece of material laying atop a thick layer of foam, which reduces cabinet vibrations. However, isolation pads can be pricey and can have an ugly, bulky appearance.

Does the shape of a subwoofer enclosure matter?

The form of your subwoofer box doesn’t important, despite the fact that this is a contentious topic. Instead, concentrate on the driver’s design and the engineering inside the subwoofer shell.

What subwoofer enclosure is the most effective?

The dual-reflex version has a modest advantage over the other two narrow-bandpass enclosure types when it comes to efficiency.

Next in line, the ported enclosure and wide-bandwidth dual-reflex both show excellent efficiency.

How long should a subwoofer be broken in?

We recommend a solid break in time of 20/24 hours.  Overnight, you can set it up with a strong, clear signal.  You are now prepared to install and continue your journey.

When is it not advisable to use a subwoofer?

Five Arguments Against Subwoofer Use (and why they are wrong)
Five Arguments Against Subwoofer Use (and why they are wrong)
First, subwoofers require too much space.
Reason 2: Subwoofers and main speakers don’t mix nicely.
Reason 3: There isn’t any music there (20 – 80 Hz)
Reason #4: It’s challenging to properly connect subwoofers.

Can I leave my subwoofer on continuously?

Yes, as long as your subwoofer includes an auto standby mode, you can leave it on constantly. Subwoofers that are in standby use less energy and last longer.    Older subwoofers without this feature should be unplugged while not in use since heat created by electricity escaping causes the amplifier to become hotter than usual.

How much electricity is consumed by a subwoofer?

From 150 to 1000 watts

How much electricity is consumed by a subwoofer?

The majority of subwoofers need between 150 and 1000 watts to recreate the sound they are receiving. Although the power can be raised by adding an amplifier, it is advisable to stick with speakers that only need around 20 watts of power if you only want something tiny and portable.

Do subwoofers automatically shut off?

Many amps and most subwoofers include automatic on or standby settings.  On, off, and auto or standby are the most common settings for the power switch.  On and off have obvious meanings.

Can a subwoofer operate without an amp?

The answer is yes almost always. You’ll need to locate an amplifier that will power your sub unless your vehicle or boat already has a system that does so. A low-power signal (RCA output) from your head unit is often available for use with an amplifier to drive your subwoofer.

Why does my sub overheat?

When clipping is present the subwoofer moves less than normal due to the plateaus in the waveform and in turn causes excess heat to build up. Over time this excess heat causes the voice coil to break down and eventually fail.

Can you use a subwoofer as a speaker?

Subwoofers are built with low-frequency audio signal emissions in mind, and this includes their structural layout, list of included parts, and input and output ports.  Because they lack the ability to stream the high-frequency audio signals needed by other speakers, subs cannot be used as speakers.

Why doesn’t my subwoofer work?

Checking the fuse should be your first step if your subwoofer stops working. Replace it if it is blown and check to see if the issue is resolved. If it doesn’t, there can be another issue with the subwoofer, in which case you’ll need to have an expert fix it.

Can a subwoofer be connected to the speaker output?

The subwoofer can be connected using an additional set of speaker cables, as shown above if you’re using it with a stereo receiver that doesn’t have a subwoofer output (which many stereo receivers do). This only works if the subwoofer has speaker-level (speaker wire) connections, like the choices in our Best Budget Subwoofer guide.
