Woodstream 1026393 Electric Fence Energizers User Manual

1026393 Electric Fence Energizers

Product Information

The Electric Fence Energizers, Chargers, Controllers, Fencers
are manufactured by Woodstream Corporation. These products are
designed to provide power and control for electric fences.

For optimal results, it is recommended to have the following
accessories:

  1. Electric Fence Tester
  2. Three 6-8′ Ground Rods
  3. Battery Tester (For DC and Solar)
  4. Three Ground Rod Clamps
  5. Two Lengths of 20 KV Insulated Hook-up Wire (one long enough to
connect the fence energizer to the ground system and one long
enough to connect the fence energizer to the fence line)

It is important to note that certain factors can result in
decreased fence performance, such as brush, weed and plant growth
around the base of the fence, improper grounding, snow, cracked or
broken insulators, fence wires that are less than 4 inches apart,
dry, rocky or sandy soils, and insufficiently charged battery.

Product Usage Instructions

Step 1: Mount Fence Energizer

Mount the fence energizer inside or in a waterproof enclosure.
This is required for AC energizers. You can use plastic/PVC pipe
for mounting.

  • To Fence: Connect the power source to the fence
    connection.
  • To Ground: Connect the power source to the ground
    connection.

There are different installation options depending on the type
of energizer:

  • AC/DC Inside installation
  • AC Outdoor Sheltered Installation
  • DC Outside Installation
  • Solar T-Post Installation (applicable for specific models)
  • Solar Wood Post Installation (applicable for specific
    models)

Step 2: Connect Ground and Fence Terminals

Connect the hook-up wire to the GROUND terminal and the FENCE
terminal of the fence energizer. Ensure there is wire-to-metal
contact when connecting the terminals.

Step 3: Connect to Ground System

Connect the hook-up wire from the fence energizer to the ground
terminal. Use ground rod clamps to connect ground rods to the wire.
The ground rods should be placed at a distance of 10 feet from each
other.

Step 4: Connect to Fence Line

Depending on the type of fence line, use either an
aluminum/steel/poly wire connection or a poly tape connection. Use
galvanized line clamps or poly tape connector clamps for secure
connections.

Step 5: Power Fence Energizer

Note: At this point, the fence energizer will be outputting
voltage. Do not touch the fence terminal or fence wire to avoid
electric shock.

Depending on the type of energizer:

  • For AC energizers, power the fence by plugging the power cord
    into a 110V outlet.
  • For DC energizers, power the fence by connecting alligator
clips to a 6 or 12-volt rechargeable deep cycle marine
    battery.
  • For Solar energizers, power the fence by turning the on/off
switch to the ON position. It is important to note that solar
energizers must be placed in the sun and turned off for three days
before use to ensure the battery has a sufficient charge.

Electric Fencing Basics and Testing

The electric fencing system works when an energizer sends an
electrical pulse through the fence wires, creating a deterrent for
animals. The system includes a fence energizer, insulated hook-up
wire, and a ground system.

To test the electric fence, use an electric fence tester to
check for voltage presence and ensure proper functioning of the
system.

BEEFORE YOU START
WARNING: Read ALL these instructions. Only use electric fence energizer products for the purpose intended as defined in this manual. This controller must be grounded. If it should malfunction or break down, grounding reduces the risk of electrical shock by providing a path of low resistance for the electric current. Grounding this product is provided by properly installed ground rod electrically connected to the fence controller output ground terminal. To reduce the risk of electric shock, an AC line operated fence controller has an polarized plug (one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way. To reduce risk of electrical shock do not remove cover. Refer to service personnel. Never electrify barbed wire! The barbs may injure animals if they become tangled in the fence. Always disconnect battery-powered fence controllers from the battery before recharging the battery. Failure to do so may damage your fence controller and battery charger, and void your warranty. Never run more than on fence controller on the same fence line at one time. The pulses of short shock solid state fence controllers will be too close together and may be hazardous to animals and people. It will also damage your fence controllers. Instruct all persons how to disconnect a fence controller in case of emergency. Post signs on electric fences along public roads or near residences. Never disconnect wires or approach a fence during lightning storms. WARNING: Risk of electric shock! Do not connect an eletric fence to any other device such as a cattle trainer or a poultry trainer. Otherwise lightning striking your fence will be conducted to all other devices. Never connect a DC fence to an AC power supply. WARNING: Energizers requiring an external ground must be properly grounded. WARNING: Many AC energizers are internally grounded and are equipped with polarized 2 prong plugs. These plugs must never be altered and must be inserted into a properly installed, appropriate outlet. Only use a polarized extension cord. Damaged polarized plugs must be replaced with polarized plugs. failure to follow this warning could create a safety hazard, damage the energizer, and void the warranty. Install fence lines powered by seperate fence energizers far enough apart to prevent contact with both fence lines at the same time. Simultaneously touching two fences powered by seperate energizers could be hazardous. Install fence lines powered by seperate fence energizers far enough apart to prevent contact with both fence lines at the same time. Simultaneously touching two fences powered by seperate energizers could be hazardous. In a double-insulated energizer, two systems of insulation are provided instead of grounding. No means of equipment ground is provided in the supply cord of a double-insulated energizer, nor should a means for equipment grounding be added to the energizer. Servicing of a double-insulated energizer requires extreme care and knowledge of the system, and should be done only by a serive personnel. Replacement parts for a double-insulated energizer must be identical to the parts they replace.

How Electric Fencing Works

Ground System

The system works when an

animal provides an

electrical path by touching

the fence wire and the

earth simultaneously. The

electricity then passes

through the animal, into

the soil and back to the

Testing Ground System

100 yards
Short the fence using a metal bar or wire

To fence energizer (FENCE Terminal)
Push probe into ground
To fence energizer (GROUND Terminal)

Touch ground rod with tester. If reading is over 400 volts, grounding is inadequate. Add additional ground rods 10 feet apart connected by hook-up wire until reading is under 400 volts.

Testing Hook-up Wire

Touch tester contacts to hook-up wire.

To FENCE Terminal

Push probe into ground

To test the hook-up wire, remove fence energizer power source (unplug or disconnect from battery) and disconnect the hook-up wire from the fence line. Power fence energizer and then check hook-up wire as shown.

Testing Fence Line
Touch fence contacts to fence wire. For poly tape, insert between contacts
and rotate 1/4 turn.
Push probe into ground

Voltage is displayed while maintaining contact with the
fence line.

Testing Fence Energizer

Electric Fence Energizer

Remove fence energizer power source (unplug or disconnect from battery) and disconnect the fence and ground wires. Reconnect the energizer to its power source and touch metal bolts of the ground and fence terminals with ground and fence prong from a tester.
