Fermenting Chicken Feed
![]() | MEASURE THE FEED • Approximately 1/2 cup per bird • Determine the total amount and cut it in half • Feed expands as it ferments |
![]() | ADD WATER • Add enough water to cover the feed by 2 inches • Use non-chlorinated water |
![]() | GIVE IT A STIR • Stir together the feed and the water • Use a wooden spoon, don’t use metal! |
![]() | COVER • Cover the jar with a breathable cloth like cheesecloth • Use a rubber band to fasten the cloth |
![]() | STIR DAILY • Stir the feed at least 2-3 times each day • It will take 3 days for the feed to ferment |
![]() | WHEN IT’S DONE • There should be bubbles on the top of the feed • Strain out the feed into a bowl |
![]() | SERVE! • Serve to your flock topped with Grubblies! |
TIPS:
- Throw out the feed if you see or smell mold.
- Always have the feed covered in water.
- While the feed is fermenting, keep it in a cool, dark location

| 48 HOURS he feed may rise and you will see fermenting bubbles. | 72 HOURS Bubbles will be on top and the feed will smell slightly sour! |
