Safety Precautions
When working with lead-acid and 12v vehicle batteries take precautions to avoid the risk of danger and injury.
Batteries contain corrosive chemicals and can produce explosive gas as a by-product of their operation.
Wear eye protection when working around batteries.
Avoid flame or sparks that could ignite gas produced by the battery and cause an explosion. Connection and disconnection of cables to the battery terminals is the most common cause of sparks.
Remove jewelry as it may cause a short circuit and serious burn injuries.
When lifting a battery use a carrier or lift at opposite corners of the base. Ensure caps are tight Be sure there is good ventilation in a room where a battery is being charged.
Never test the battery while the engine is still running, make sure the engine is OFF.
Never lay tools or other metal parts on top of a battery

Product Summary

1.1 Product Profile
The SP61060 Battery Tester adopts what is currently the world’s most advanced conductance testing technology available. Too easily, quickly, and accurately measure the actual cold cranking amps capability of a vehicle starting battery and the health state of the battery itself. This will assist maintenance personnel finds problems quickly and accurately, thus reducing vehicle repair times.
Suitable to test all automotive cranking lead-acid batteries, including ordinary lead-acid batteries,
AGM flat plate battery, AGM spiral battery, and Gel battery, etc.
Directly detects bad cells in the battery
Polarity reverses connection protection, reverse connection will not damage the tester or affect the vehicle and battery.
Accurately test a battery with low voltage, no need to full charge before testing.
Testing standards include currently the world’s majority of battery standards, CCA, BCI, CA, MCA, JIS, DIN, IEC, EN, SAE, GB.
Supports multi-languages, customer can select different language package, which includes: English, German, Dutch, Finnish, Polish, French, Italian, etc.

1.2 Product Function
The battery test is targeted to analyze the battery’s health status, by calculating the actual cold the cranking capability of the battery, and the effect of aging.
The tester provides reliable analysis of a battery’s condition and notifies the user to replace the battery in advance of its ultimate failure.

1.3 Working Environment Requirement
Working Environment Temp.: -20°C to +60°C
This tester is intended to be used by automotive and marine manufacturers, automotive and marine maintenance/repair workshops, as well as automotive and marine battery distributors and retailers. It is applicable for DIY users, small engine and motorcycle repair workshops, etc.

Points to remember

  • Low-use batteries should be charged once every 1 – 2 months to extend the battery life.
  • Generally speaking, a battery needs recharging if under 12.40 volts
  • When charging is finished, do not test immediately, wait at least 10 minutes to allow the battery to stabilize, then test.
  • Even when testing an in-vehicle battery, after the engine is turned off (for the most accurate results) wait 10 minutes before testing.
  • If the battery’s health state is lower than 60% consider replacing the battery.

Tester Components

2.1 Tool Description

SP tools SP61060 Battery Analyser - Tool Description

  1. LCD DISPLAY — Indicates test results. It is a backlit 2-line display with 8 characters on each line.
  2. ENTER BUTTON — Confirms a selection (or action) from a menu list, or returns to the main menu.
  3. SCROLL BUTTON — Scrolls through menu items or cancels an operation.
  4. CLIPS — Connects to the battery terminals Red with + and Black to -.

2.2 Battery Internal Resistance Explanation
IR (Internal Resistance) is an important factor when judging battery capability.
When the internal resistance of a battery exceeds a certain limit, the engine can’t be started.
The normal IR of car batteries should be less than 10mΩ, but there will be slight differences between manufacturers.
The lower the IR the greater CCA capability ie, for the same kind of batteries, the lower the IR, the healthier the battery is (Except for a short circuit).

2. 3 Battery Voltage Explanation
Normally It is impossible for the battery voltage to show as 100%.
The max value is 98% even after just being charged.

  • 98% Charged = Battery voltage Above 12.59v
  • 75% Charged = Battery voltage 12.45v
  • 50% Charged = Battery voltage 12.15v
  • Discharged condition = Battery voltage less than 12v

Operating Instructions

3.1 Before Test
3.1.1 Notice before the test

For testing batteries of low-frequency use, it is necessary to cycle (charge and discharge) the battery several times before testing, normally 3-5 times will achieve a reliable test result. Because only after the cycling of the battery can the chemical properties of the battery be restored, after a long period of inactivity.
If after 3-5 times of battery charge and discharge, the battery health state is still lower than 60%, then battery replacement should be considered.

  1. Low-use batteries should be charged once every 1-2 months to extend the battery life for the vehicle or boat.
  2. Always turn off the engine before testing.
  3. When testing an in-vehicle battery, (for the most accurate results) wait 10 minutes after the engine is turned off before testing, this will allow the battery to normalize.

3.1.2 Connecting the Analyzer Before Testing
Before testing, use a wire brush/alkaline cleaner to clean the battery terminals, remove all grease, dirt, and corrosion. You must achieve 100% electrical connection to the battery terminals to obtain accurate test results.

Any resistance at the connection to the battery terminals will give a misleading test result.
At the start of the test, ensure that all of the car electronics are turned off the doors are closed, and the ignition key is turned off.
Attach the red test clip to the battery positive + terminal, the black test clip to the Negative – terminal.

NB: The tester has reverse polarity protection, if connected incorrectly, the screen is not bright, but it will not harm the tester.

In order to ensure a good connection, it is best to wriggle the test clips on the terminal post a few times.
The tester draws its operating power from the battery being tested; it will only operate when connected to a battery with more than 6 volts available. For this reason, it will not operate if connected to a dead flat battery.

3.2 Tester Start-up
The tester automatically starts up after the clamps are correctly connected and display the BAT TOOL start-up interface. After 2seconds, it automatically enters the battery test program.

In a few seconds, the results of the testing will be displayed in endless rotation on the LCD screen (Holding the scroll button down will halt the rotation).

SP tools SP61060 Battery Analyser - Holding the scroll button down will halt the rotation

Press ENTER button to exit.

The battery test results are used to determine the battery condition:

  1. Health greater than 60%, Voltage greater than 12.4V = Good Battery
  2. Health greater than 60%, Voltage less than 12.4V = Good, Recharge
  3. Health less than 60%, Voltage greater than 12.4V = Replace Battery
  4. Health less than 60%, Voltage less than 12.4V—Charge and Retest
  5. Health equals 0%, Voltage less than 12.4V, 0 CCA = Replace Battery (Internal damage)

3.3.4 24V system testing – CAUTION!
Do not directly test batteries in a 24V system; it will cause damage to the unit. For 2 x 12V batteries (in series or parallel), disconnect the batteries and test them individually.

For batteries, in parallel, they must be disconnected from the positive and negative connection as well. If you do not isolate the batteries from each other it will lead to erroneous test results.

3.4 Additional Functions
3.4.1 Language Choice
To change the language, go to menu 2 and use the scroll button to find the appropriate language, and then press enter to confirm.
