FAQS

Which country makes it?

The MDR-7506 (and its virtually identical, original/concurrent model MDR-V6) were both originally made in Japan, then Thailand, then, reportedly after factory flooding in 2011 production moved to China (and Malaysia), then for the past many years in Thailand again. If you’re buying new ones today, they will most certainly be made in Thailand.

Can you remove the cord and replace it if needed?

Not with these. If you are looking for sound quality and a removable/replaceable cord you may want to check out Audio Technica M40x and M50x. M40x is the cheaper of the two, comes with a spiral cord and is collapsable like the Sony V6.

Do the Mdr V6 come with a pouch to keep them in?

Yes, they come in a nice quality vinyl bag with drawstring that says SONY on it, lower right corner. If it does not say Sony and the quality is quite cheap then you most likely have a counterfeit fake headphone made in China (Although the headphone will say “MADE IN THAILAND” on the inside of the headband). Buy from Amazon, B&H or other reputable/quality dealer for the real Sony MDR-V6. Trying to save $20 will most likely get you the fake!

Do these headphones have a true, flat sound or do they boost bass/highs/mids/anything? I need headphones for monitoring that reproduce true.

I know this comes late to answer the original question, but for anyone else wondering, the output is definitely not what I would consider flat. The boost to the bottom end is definitely mild compared to something like Beats or a V-Moda. though I would not consider these to be as precise or flat as the Beyerdynamic DT770’s that they replaced for me. However, they were $70 and fall comfortably into the “good enough” range that as long as nobody’s paying you actual money for studio mastering services, they’ll work fine.
One thing I will say in their definite favor is that they get absurdly, ridiculously loud without distorting. You could sort of throw any job at these headphones and they’d do a respectable job at it.

what is voice coil?

The voice coil is an electromagnet attached to the diaphragm or “cone” of a large or small speaker. Down the middle of this electromagnet is a permanent magnet, but it’s attached to the frame of the speaker or headphones. When electrical impulses from the sound wave energize the coil/electromagnet, it make the electromagnet either the negative or positive pole of a magnet temporarily. This magnetized coil reacts to the permanent magnet and moves. This moves the diaphragm and causes air pressure to push against your ear drum. We hear this as sound if the diaphragm moves fast enough. The diaphragm needs to move back and forth about 8 thousands times a second for us to hear voice, about 30 times a second for us to hear bass and about 15,000 times per second for us to perceive high frequencies. The lighter the coil/diaphragm, the faster it can move. But the coil also has to have enough windings to make a strong electromagnet, which means weight and thus less response. Making an excellent coil is a major part of good speaker design.

Do these headphones work with a digital piano keyboard?

As long as the keyboard has a headphone jack that fits either 3.5mm or 1/4″ plug size it should work fine. These are standard and common plug sizes. But check the device or specifications if you haven’t acquired the keyboard yet. These are NOT wireless Bluetooth headphone. Unless you use an adapter. They MUST be plugged in.

How well do these headphones block out environmental noise? Would they allow for easy music listening in airplanes or subways?

These headphones does very well in blocking out other noise. I use it in my office and works very well. I think they should be fine inairplanes or subways.

Is this in manufacturer-sealed box with pouch and adaptor?

Yes ! It comes in a nice manufacturer-sealed box with a PU pouch and an 3.5mm Stereo Jack to 1/4″ Stereo Plug Adapter.

How do these compare to AKG 240?

The MDR-7506 is a large diaphragm foldable headphone designed for professional studio and live/broadcast applications.

Can they be used with an iPhone?

Yes, they can be used with iPhone.

why do these have that prop 65 warning on them?

Probably because of DEHP. A chemical used with vinyl to make it more soft and pliable: Headphone earpieces.

Is there any issue with the 3.5mm plug fitting into an iPhone jack that has a case on it?

It may depend on the case. It fits my iPad with the standard Apple case, but it’s a tight fit. It fits my son-in-law’s iPhone in an Otter Box.

is the 10 foot cord a coiled or straight cord

The cord that came with my set of v6 headphones is a ‘voice-coil’ type cable. It stretches out pretty far, but I’ve never measured it’s actual length.

Will it work with a ps4 controller?

This Sony Headphones uses stereo mini plug (3.5 mm jack). You may your check your PS4 controller if it supports this kind of connection.

Are these headphone comfortable enough to wear at the gym? How much do they weigh?

To simply answer your question: yes they are comfortable enough to wear at the gym and they weigh approx 230 g without the cord factored in to the weight. However, these headphones go over the ear and do form a nice seal which while working out could hold a lot of sweat. Also they are a little heavy to be doing anything extremely physical, and the cord would be a bit long and might create a hazard if you were not careful.
