
MECHANICAL PACKING INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
3000 Soot Blower Packing
Installation Instructions
System should be shut down, depressurized, drained, and cool before repacking. Observe all safety requirements.
- Unbolt the packing gland, pull back the packing gland, and tie it back if necessary to provide a sufficient working area.
- Remove old packing with a flexible packing extractor and proceed carefully so as not to damage the tube.
The stuffing box must be free of any previous packing. - Clean all components including stuffing box and gland. Use an approved cleaner if necessary.
- Inspect tube and stuffing box for excessive pits, nicks, burrs, cuts, and scratches, which may act as a path of leakage. Repair or replace parts as necessary.
- Install bottom ring around tube by twisting slightly. Never open rings with a hinge-like action (See Figure 1).
Use a tamping tool to seat the ring to the bottom of the stuffing box.

- Repeat step 5 until all sealing rings are installed including the top ring (See Figure 2). Be sure to install rings in the correct sequence. Seat each ring individually with a tamping tool. Stagger joints 90° apart.
CAUTION: Care should be taken to avoid damaging ring lips - Reinstall the packing gland until finger tight. Take up gland nuts one full turn to properly spread lips and establish a seal. Adjust packing gland nuts as necessary. After several operations, readjustment of gland nuts may be required.
