Welcome to the Summer Institute for Teens at Emily Carr
University of Art + Design! This program offers a creative and
inspiring experience for teens to explore their artistic talents
through hands-on activities and workshops. Whether you have a
passion for art, game design, or are just starting your creative
journey, this program will help you discover your artistic
expression and provide an opportunity to meet new people in the
vibrant world of art and design.

Materials + Software

Studio courses require various materials and/or software for
experimentation and project creation. Please refer to the Course
Outline for specific information about the materials and software
required for your studio.

Attendance

Attendance is taken at the start of each class and after lunch.
If a student hasn’t returned to class within 15 minutes of the
start time, the Instructors and Programs Assistants will notify the
CS Office. In case of absence without prior notice, the CS Office
will contact the parents and/or guardians. To report late arrival
or absence, please use one of the following options:

following information:

  • The student’s first and last name
  • The studio they are registered in
  • Their attendance status (late or absent)
  • If late, the expected arrival time
  • If absent, whether it is a full or part day and when they are
    expected back in class

Online Learning

All summer program participants will have access to online
learning tools and online library resources. The learning
management system used is Moodle, where you can access course
materials, assignments, and resources. Please log into Moodle using
your username and password provided in your Welcome Letter before
the start of the program. Additionally, make sure to download Zoom
and test your camera and microphone settings in advance to ensure
smooth participation in online classes if required.

Lunch

The lunch hour is from 12:00pm to 1:00pm daily. Students are
encouraged to bring their own lunch and snacks. There are food
options available on and near campus, including the cafeteria
located on the main floor of the building and Nemesis Coffee across
the plaza from ECU’s main entrance. The cafeteria operates from
8:00am to 3:00pm. Vending machines are also available on campus for
snacks and drinks.

During lunch hour, students are encouraged to remain on campus
to interact with each other, participate in lunchtime activities,
and learn more about the ECU community. If a student plans to leave
campus during lunch hour, they must sign out before leaving the
studio classroom. If any assistance is needed during lunch hour,
designated lunch monitors can be found in the cafeteria area or
help can be requested at the ECU front desk or security.

Whether you’re the next Yayoi Kusama, a budding game designer, or just starting your creative journey, discover your artistic expression, meet new people, and explore the vibrant world of art and design. Before all that, we want to share some important information to set you up for success from day one!
MATERIALS + SOFTWARE
Studio courses require various materials and/or software for you to work with to experiment with new ideas and create amazing projects. Specific information about your studios can be found on the Course Outline.
MATERIALS The list of materials for your specific studio can be found on the Course Outline. Materials will differ between studios, and we do our best to consider must-haves versus nice-to-haves. Depending on the course you will be taking, materials and supplies may cost up to $180. SOFTWARE Information about required software for your studio can be found on the Course Outline. ECU will provide you access to required software(s) for your studios. Some software collects your personal information when signing up. Please consult information available in the Welcome Site.
FIRST DAY Tuesday July 4
Welcome Assembly
CHECK IN 8:30am ­ 9:00am On the first day, please arrive a little early to check in, say hello, and pick up your Welcome Pack.
WELCOME ASSEMBLY: Summer Institute for Teens 9:00am ­ 10:00am The Welcome Assembly starts promptly at 9am and will take place in the Reliance Theatre and via Zoom. This is your first introduction to the program, the instructors and programs assistants who you will be learning from and working with, and your fellow classmates.

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is taken at the start of each class and when you return to class after lunch. Instructors and Programs Assistants notify the CS Office of any student who has not returned to class within 15 minutes of the start time. We will contact your parents and/or guardians to follow up on the absence if we have not received prior notice.

ONLINE LEARNING
All summer program participants will have access to online learning tools and online library resources. Instructors may use online learning tools in different ways, so please make sure log in and test out platforms and tools ahead of time.
MOODLE Moodle is our learning management system for access to course materials, assignments, and resources. Your login username can be found in your Welcome Letter. Please log into Moodle by selecting “Login for CS Student/Guest Log in” and using your username and password to access Moodle before the start of the program.
ZOOM Your SIT studio will be on campus. However, there may be expected circumstances that require us to pivot online. In order to be prepared, please download Zoom here, and make sure that you grant access to your camera and microphone. Test your settings in advance to ensure you can join your classes smoothly!
LUNCH
Lunch hour is 12:00pm – 1:00pm daily. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch and snacks each day. There are a few options on and near campus for purchasing food, including the cafeteria located on the main floor of the building, and Nemesis Coffee, located across the plaza from ECU’s main entrance. The hours of operation for the cafeteria are from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Vending machines are also available on campus for snacks and drinks.

Students are encouraged to remain on campus during lunch hour to get to know each other, participate in lunch time activities, and get to know more about the ECU community. If a student plans to leave campus during the lunch hour, they must sign out before leaving the studio classroom. If a student requires assistance during lunch hour, they can find a designated lunch monitor in the cafeteria area or ask for help at the ECU front desk or security.
Students must return promptly to their studio classrooms at 1:00pm, as attendance will be taken prior to the start of the afternoon session.
LIBRARY RESOURCES
LIBRARY SUMMER HOURS WILL BE MONDAY ­ FRIDAY, 9AM – 5PM Students in the Summer Institute for Teens program will have access to use the library as Community Borrowers. All you need is you OneCard, or a piece of ID. Students are encouraged to use the library, hang out with friends, make noise, laugh, play a game, make art, use the hammock chair, get free supplies from the Supply Swap, read fancy magazines, enjoy the plants.
BORROWING FROM THE LIBRARY You will have an active library account from the first day of your course, up to the end of the Summer Semester. Emily Carr University is a fine-free environment, but we do charge the replacement cost for lost items. You are welcome to borrow books, exhibition catalogues and graphic novels for 3 weeks at a time. Games, embroidery kits and other items from the “Creative Tools and Wellness Collection” can be borrowed for 7 days. All Community Borrowers have a limit of 25 items checked out at any given time. We have friendly staff who can help you learn to use the library and find things, and we have Research Help available on demand during library hours.
ACCESSING E-RESOURCES 1. Go to my.openathens.net to access the OpenAthens
authentication platform 2. Click on the “Sign in with OpenAthens” tab 3. Sign in using these credentials:

PRINTING IN THE LIBRARY The Library has computers, scanners, and printers that you are welcome to use. Present your OneCard and the Library staff can assist with collecting and adding money to your Papercut account, including a short orientation on how to use the self-serve printing. Please note that Emily Carr does not offer free printing anywhere on campus.

OTHER EXCITING LIBRARY OFFERINGS Supplies Swap and Collage Materials The Supplies Swap in the Emily Carr University Library is a space for donating and accessing usable art and design supplies. Students, faculty, and staff can donate new or gently used supplies to be reused and repurposed, or find materials to inspire and complete projects without having to purchase them new.
Sustainability Resources This collection includes books, DVDs, and e-resources, as well as other items such as a waterproof birding backpack, binoculars, and field guides; a seed swap cabinet where you can take or leave seeds for food, flowers, and dye plants. Used batteries and soft and flexible plastic waste can be left in the designated recycling bins
Exhibition Space We encourage students, faculty, staff and alumni to be active participants in the library space by submitting their ideas for library exhibitions and space interventions. More information, including our policy document and submission guidelines can be found here.
HEALTH + SAFETY
The health and safety of the ECU community is our highest priority. With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and the end of mandatory masking in BC, there are still ways to keep each other protected on campus.
HEALTHY HABITS The most important ways you can prevent the spread of germs is to wash your hands often, avoid touching your face, and stay home if you are sick. If you need guidance, contact your family doctor, phone 8-1-1, or use the BC COVID-19 Self-Assessment.
DAILY ASSESSMENT All ECU students, instructors, and staff should assess themselves daily for COVID-19 symptoms or possible exposures before accessing campus. Antigen tests are available in the Summer office.
Good to Know: Accessibility Services
Accessibility Services provides accommodations to the learning environment for students with speech, hearing, visual, physical, mental health and neurological disabilities as well as chronic health conditions, acquired brain injury and temporary disabilities.

EXHIBITION
The Summer Teen programs wrap up with a public exhibition at Emily Carr’s Michael O’Brian Exhibition Commons from July 28 ­ August 6, 2023 and an online exhibition website that launches at the conclusion of the program. This exhibition is your chance to show off your amazing projects for a broad online audience so people can appreciate your talent and check out your artwork.
EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION On Friday July 28th from 4:00pm ­ 6:00pm, we will be hosting an opening reception to celebrate you and your accomplishments. If you can attend in person, it’s a chance to come together and honour the hard work you have put into the Summer Institute for Teens program. Invite your friends and family to join in the celebration too! The opening reception is going to be a memorable event filled with joy and recognition. You deserve this moment, and it’s going to be fantastic!
CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION
Teens who successfully complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion at the opening reception of the exhibition on July 28th. To receive the certificate, you must successfully complete the program by demonstrating consistent engagement and completion of assignments.

CETP 124 GAME DESIGN
COURSE OUTLINE
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Bring your storytelling to the next level through game art + design! In this fun studio, you will learn the fundamentals of game design and how to communicate your ideas in this interactive medium. You will apply linear and non-linear storytelling techniques to develop a story concept, and use visual design principles to develop the look and feel of your game. You will learn simple coding and programming skills to prototype game mechanics, develop creative problemsolving skills, become familiar with the design process as it applies to video games, and learn how to apply basic UX design methods towards achieving a fun and positive user experience for your game.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students will:
1. Acquire a solid understanding of game design fundamentals 2. Apply storytelling techniques towards developing a game concept and creating authentic characters and
environments 3. Apply basic notions of visual design to develop the visual identity of a game 4. Develop a basic understanding of sound design and how it can be used to enhance the narrative and user
experience 5. Apply simple coding and programming skills towards building an interactive digital game 6. Become familiar with the iterative process as applied to the UX design of video games: prototyping, play testing
and fine tuning.
LEARNING FORMAT
Courses taking place on campus include a variety of instructional methods such as in-class lectures and discussions, instructor guidance, peer feedback, and group or independent projects. All course activities and student work will be completed during instructional times.
Online courses include both synchronous instruction and asynchronous work time. Synchronous learning may include virtual lectures, video demos, virtual meetings with instructors and classmates. Asynchronous time may include independent study and practice, assignment completion and homework, and peer discussion forums.
SOFTWARE
Required: Unity, Adobe Creative Cloud
Students attending courses on campus will have access to the necessary software in the computer labs on campus. Students attending online courses will be provided access to educational versions of software to be downloaded prior to the first day of class. No software purchase is required.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
This course is eligible for a Certificate of Completion. To receive the certificate, students must successfully complete the program by demonstrating consistent engagement and completion of assignments.

LEARNING AGREEMENT: EXPECTATIONS + CONDUCT
Attendance + Participation Students are expected to attend classes during regularly scheduled, published times, arrive punctually and have materials needed to participate in class activities and assignments. Attendance is taken at the start of each day and after lunch hour. Instructors will notify the CS Office of any students who have not arrived within 15 minutes of the start time, and we will contact parents /guardians to follow up on the absence if we have not received prior notice.
Online Learning To get the most from your online learning experience, and to create a positive learning environment, students should expect to participate in discussions, break-out groups and discussion forums as established by the instructor. Students are responsible for regularly checking in to the Moodle site for assignments, resources, deadlines and course updates. All students are expected to log in on time and be prepared to engage in the work for scheduled classes.
Classroom Etiquette A successful learning experience depends on mutual trust, respect and support. Students are expected to contribute to an inclusive learning environment free of bullying, harassment and discrimination. This includes addressing classmates using preferred names and pronouns, and being mindful of diverse lived experiences, levels of access and privileges.
Privacy Emily Carr is committed to protecting students’ personal information. All approved online learning tools (including Moodle and Zoom) are protected and safe. Any video recordings of lectures, presentations or critiques are stored on Canadian servers and only available to the instructor and students. If other online platforms are used for course participation, students, parents and/or guardians will be notified of any potential privacy considerations and asked to provide consent.

Academic Integrity Academic Integrity outlined in University policy 4.17 Academic Integrity is understood as producing work in a way that acknowledges the contributions of others in the design, creation, production, writing, etc. of any work. Any action or behaviour that violates Academic Integrity is considered a serious offence of academic misconduct and may result in serious academic consequences.
Student Conduct All students must abide by the standards of conduct outlined in University policies 4.6 Student Conduct, 8.6 Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination, and 3.6 Sexual and Gender-based Violence and Misconduct. The University takes violations of these standards very seriously and may initiate disciplinary proceedings.

FIELD TRIPS

The Summer Institute for Teens provides opportunities for students to engage with Vancouver’s local art + design community. To complement studio practices, instructors may have planned field trips and other off-campus activities during the program, such as gallery and museum visits, immersive site-specific activities, and visits to professional studios.
Field trips are either within walking distance of the Emily Carr campus or will require travel via public transit. It is strongly recommended that students have a Translink Compass Card with stored value to cover transit fares, or a Translink Monthly Pass ($59.95 for all zones).
All off-campus activities will be supervised by two adult chaperones.
Please note, if a field trip concludes near at the end of the day, students will be dismissed for home from that location.
