PRODUCT APPLICATION

SURFACE PREPARATION
Proper surface preparation is important. Please follow the instructions thoroughly. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and sound. Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150 and #180 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust with a vacuum and all dirt, grease, or glue with a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits.

WARNING!
If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESSES SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or logging on to www.epa.gov/lead.

TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test the stain to verify the desired color. To test, apply the stain in an inconspicuous area. For a deeper color, additional coats may be required.

APPLICATION
Stir the contents or shake the container before use. Use when temperatures are between 60-90°F (16-32°C) and humidity is less than 85%. Allow longer dry times for damp, humid days. Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire job. Apply one coat of stain liberally with a brush or a clean lint-free rag. Allow to penetrate for 5-10 minutes; then remove excess by wiping with a rag in the direction of the grain. Removal of all excess material is essential to ensure proper dry time and proper adhesion to the wood.

PROTECTING THE WOOD
To complete your wood project and for best protection, finish with any Varathane Polyurethane depending on your project needs.

COVERAGE
Each quart will cover approximately 225-275 square feet. Each gallon will cover approximately 1,00-1,100 square feet. Coverage may vary depending on the applicator and the porosity of the wood.

DRY TIME
Dry times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. For best results allow stain to dry at least 1 hour then apply Varathane Polyurethane. Darker colors may require a slightly longer dry time.

CLEAN-UP
Clean application tools and equipment with mineral spirits.
