Frequently Ask Question
A well-designed microwave will need 3” of clearance at the top and the sides, with at least 1” at the rear. In other words, if you are asking ‘Does a microwave need space around it? ‘ the answer is yes. It ensures the right level of airflow and protects the appliance.
Can all microwaves be built-in? Not all microwaves can be built-in as they are available in either freestanding or built-in models. We recommend that you install built-in microwaves into a cabinet, but if you do wish to install a freestanding model as a built-in we have built-in trim kits that allow you to do so.
Widths align with standard cabinet widths, usually 24, 27, or 30 inches. Height typically ranges from 17 to 22 inches. Depths range from roughly 20 to 25 inches with the door closed and 30 to 35 inches with the door open.
Placing your microwave on a shelf is a great option. This means you can place your shelf nearly anywhere in your kitchen. Just make sure it is wide enough and sturdy enough to support the size and weight of your microwave.
Standard models are around 60cm wide. Measure your kitchen space to make sure it’ll fit. Check the depth of the space as built-in microwaves vary between 45 and 60cm.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends that the bottom of the microwave should be no higher than 54 inches above the floor, which would allow for 18 inches of clearance between the microwave and the typical cooktop height of 36 inches. Some manufacturers allow smaller clearances.
Aim for a location that’s convenient to the countertop, stovetop, and fridge. It’s really common to pop something straight from the fridge into the microwave, so you want the two to be close together – while ensuring there’s bench space nearby.
The main difference between countertops and built-in microwaves is the installation. Countertop models are installed on your kitchen counters by simply plugging the appliance into a nearby outlet, while built-ins are installed directly into cabinets or walls in your kitchen.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates radiation-emitting products such as microwave ovens, advises against standing directly in front of or up against the oven while it is operating. This will avoid harm from any possible leaks.
Since microwaves generate high amounts of heat, it’s important to use them safely to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards. If a microwave isn’t properly vented, it can overheat or even fuse together parts of it, causing a potential fire and/or injury.
Adequate ventilation, especially if the microwave is built into a wall of cabinetry, is a must. “The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you how much cabinet depth you need to have for a built-in,” says Sam Cipiti, vice president of R.M. Tunis Kitchens and Baths in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
The requirement of a line of sight limits the separation between stations to the visual horizon, about 30 to 50 miles (48 to 80 km)
Microwave frequencies range between 109 Hz (1 GHz) to 1000 GHz with respective wavelengths of 30 to 0.03 cm. Within this spectral domain are a number of communication systems applications that are important in both the military and civilian sectors.
The solution is to make sure that the microwave is always somewhere between four to nine feet away from the sink. It’s much safer, and simply good design. IKEA customers may not realize just how crucial microwave placement is to the success of their kitchen design.
