INSTALLATION

Place the appliance on a stable flat surface which is neither hot nor near a heat source. The surface must be dry. Keep the appliance and its mains cable out of reach of children. During use, do not place the base unit on a metal tray or a metal surface. Ensure that the voltage indicated on the rating plate of the appliance agrees with the mains voltage in your area. Connect the appliance only to a properly earthed power point with a minimum output of 6A. (Use a residual current device (RCD) seek the advice of an electrician.) While the appliance is in use, the mains plug must be accessible in case of an emergency. To ensure continued protection against risk of electric shock, connect to properly grounded outlets only.
If the power point is unsuitable for accommodating the plug of your appliance, have the power point changed by a licensed eletrician.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

  1. POWER-SUPPLY CORD
A short power-supply cord is to be provided to reduce risks resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.
Extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use. If an extension cord is used, the marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance, if the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension cord should be grounding -type 3-wire cord. The longer cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the counter top or table top where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over unintentionally.
  2. SWITCHING OFF THE KETTLE MANUALLY
The ON/OFF switch (5) can also be used to switch off the kettle before the water boils.
  3. SAFETY CUT-OFF
The kettle is protected against damage resulting from use with an insufficient volume of water. A safety cut-off will automatically disconnect the power supply if the heating element overheats. Should the kettle ever boil dry during operation, you must leave it to cool for 10 minutes before re-filling it with cold water. The safety cut-off will reset automatically once it has cooled.
  4. BEFORE USING THE KETTLE
Clean the kettle before using it for the first time by filling it completely (to the MAX mark) (8) with water, boiling the water, and then discarding the water.

HOW TO USE THE WATER KETTLE

  1. FILLING THE WATER KETTLE
Remove the appliance body from the base unit (7).
Open the lid (1), fill with water and close the lid again.
Do not fill the kettle with less than 0.15l/4 oz (9) and not more than 0.5l/17 oz (to the MAX mark) (8), to prevent the kettle from boiling dry or boiling water escaping from the spout.
  2. CONNECTION TO POWER SUPPLY
After filling the kettle, position it on the base unit (7). Ensure that the kettle body is seated correctly on the contact unit on the base unit (7).
Connect the mains plug to the power supply and move the ON/OFF switch (5) into the ON (I) position.
Note: Ensure that the ON/OFF switch is able to move freely.
  3. SWITCHING OFF
Your kettle has an automatic ON/OFF switch and will switch itself off automatically as soon as the water boils. You can switch off the kettle at any time by moving the ON/OFF switch (5) into the OFF (0) position.
Note: The kettle cannot be switched off by hand if the switch is obstructed for movement, or if the ON/OFF switch is pressed into the ON (I) position.
  4. POURING OUT WATER
To remove the kettle from the base unit (7), hold it by its handle. Ensure that the kettle body remains level while lifting it from the base unit (7). Pour the water from the spout with the lid (1) closed.
Note: Please take care when pouring out water as boiling water can cause scalds.
  5. SWITCHING THE KETTLE ON AGAIN
If the kettle was switched off by hand, it can be switched on again at any time. You may switch the kettle on again as soon as the built-in thermal safety cut-off switch has had sufficient time to cool.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE

  1. SCALE FILTER
Scale, or calcium, is a natural substance that forms when hard water is boiled. The filter (3) serves to retain the calcium in the water kettle.
  2. CLEANING AND REMOVAL OF THE FILTER
It is important to clean the filter (3) regularly. The filter (3) clips into the body and can be removed by pulling it upwards from the body. It can be cleaned by gentle brushing with a soft brush under running water.
  3. KETTLE CLEAN AND DECALE
Remove scale using either a proprietary de-scaling product suitable for plastic kettles (following the instructions carefully), or citric acid

We recommend using citric acid as follows:

  • Boil 0.5l/17oz litre of water, then unplug the kettle and stand it in an empty sink or bowl. Add 25 gm of citric acid crystals gradually, then leave the kettle to stand.
  • As soon as the effervescence subsides, empty the kettle and rinse it thoroughly with cold water. Wipe the outside of the kettle thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove all traces of citric acid which may damage the finish.
  • Do not use a more concentrated solution. Ensure that the electrical connections are completely dry before using the kettle. Citric acid crystals are available at most chemists.
Failure to de-scale may invalidate the guarantee.
  • Never use chemicals, steel wool or abrasive agents to clean the exterior of the kettle.
  • Only clean the appliance using a damp cloth.
  • Never immerse the item in water: remember this is an electrical applicant.
Note: Ensure that the mains power supply is switched off when you are not using the kettle.
  • Any other servicing should be performed by an authorized service representative.

FAQs

How do I get rust off the 17 oz. Bodum kettle’s bottom metal plate?

500 ml (2 cups) of water and 30 grammes (1 ounce) of lime or lemon juice should be prepared.

Is there a cure for a kettle that keeps restarting, or do I just need to get a new one?

I initially believed that my device was one of those that “didn’t auto-shut off,” but I soon noticed that I was picking it up as soon as I heard it boil rather than waiting for the steam to build up sufficiently to activate the auto shutoff feature. My thumb is right there by the button, so I opted to wait and let it finish but simply turn it off when I picked it up. I hope that applies to yours as well.

When pulled from the base, does the kettle turn off (and stay off) immediately?

When the water is ready to boil, the kettle turns off automatically. In a few reviews, I saw that the owners reported the kettle repeatedly turning itself back on. However, I won’t risk ANY tiny appliance, thus I can’t provide an answer. When I’m not using mine, I unplug it and don’t let water sit in it. To prevent rust and mineral buildup, I drain it hot and close the lid. I always have and will continue to do this with all of my kettles, whether they are stove-top or other.

This kettle was useless. We ordered three because they are attractive, but they are all defective. Quickly. Why are the malfunctioning of the electrical system?

They are having a problem with Bodum, and I find it unbelievable that they haven’t repaired it. Because they are lightweight and stylish, but only last for about a month, we have purchased two in the past four years. It simply doesn’t boil unless you keep your finger on the button. Sorry. It’s time to switch to a trustworthy source!

Can I use this kettle in Europe?

Unless you discover this on the Amazon site in Europe, I would assume you would require the standard adaptor.

This kettle does it have a mesh filter?

Indeed, it does.

Is there an induction heater in this kettle? The bottom heater—does it remain cool?

Yes, the bottom heater does remain cool.

What length is the power cord?

Mine has a 32-inch chord that extends from the heating base to the plug. The plug is 2 inches longer than that.

Is this made of two sections so the burner and kettle are separate? When you pour the kettle, is the cord attached and where is it attached?

The burner and the container are the only two parts. When the cable is linked to the burner, which has an enclosed design with a circular raised area that aligns with a corresponding area on the bottom of the container, a stable platform is produced. When the burner is removed, the container can be placed flat on the counter.

Replacement hinged lid for the electric water kettle on the bistro table?

Approximately two years old with no replacements

I just got the kettle, and I can’t seem to get the lid on. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

It should come with the lid on. It is broken if it isn’t.

When the water is heating up or has finished heating, does the kettle make any noises?

Yes, it does create a quiet noise, much as when water is boiling in a regular pot on an electric burner. I don’t find the loudness to be at all offensive. Additionally, there is an audible “click” when the thermostat turns off the heating element a short time after the water reaches a rolling boil. I prepare hot tea many times a week using my kettle. It’s highly practical, in my opinion, and I wholeheartedly suggest it.

This kettle has dual voltage, right? Is it usable outside of the United States?

Yes, it is dual voltage, but no. I suppose you might use a voltage converter if you have one, just as other appliances. 110 volts at 60 cycles are used.

Have you ever used this kettle while driving? for instance, an odyssey with a 110v outlet in the vehicle. Does it also function with a 12 volt outlet?

Only a 110v (household) plug is available. With a 12v outlet, it won’t function.

On the interior of the kettle, a weird fine white powder is beginning to form. Is this standard?

Yes, this is limescale, which originates in the water. You can lessen it by installing a filter on your tap that either prevents or lessens limescale. If not, just remember to clean it occasionally with a scotch. I use limescale remover every two months and make sure to wash it several times before I use it to make tea or coffee.
