Rust-oleum Cm-04 Commercial Universal Acrylic Primer Owner's Manual

CM-04 Commercial Universal Acrylic Primer

Product Information:

The CM-04 Universal Acrylic Primer is a general purpose
Direct-To-Metal (DTM) primer that is designed to work with a wide
variety of topcoats, including acrylics, alkyds, and high
performance coatings. It can be used for both interior and exterior
applications on metal and concrete surfaces. This water-based
primer offers fast drying time and excellent adhesion, making it
suitable for diverse applications.

The product is MPI #107 and #134 Certified, ensuring its quality
and performance. For the most current listing of MPI certified
products, please refer to the MPI website.

This primer is available in two sizes: 1-Gallon (278808, 292606)
and 5-Gallon (278807, 292603). It comes in two color options: White
and Gray.

Product Usage Instructions:

Surface Preparation:

  • Steel: Clean the surface using hand tools or
power tools to remove loose rust, mill scale, and deteriorated
previous coatings. For optimal performance, abrasive blast the
    steel to a minimum Commercial Grade (SSPC-SP-6, NACE 3) with a 1-2
mil (25-50 µm) surface profile. Two coats are recommended for
    abrasive blast cleaned steel.
  • Galvanized Steel: For new galvanized steel,
solvent clean to remove post-galvanizing treatments such as oil,
grease, or wax. Thoroughly wash old or existing galvanized steel to
    remove surface contaminants.
  • Concrete: Use hand or power tools to clean the
surface and remove any loose or unsound concrete, masonry, or
previous coatings. For very dense, non-porous concrete, acid
etching or abrasive blasting is recommended to remove the laitance
layer and create a surface profile. Allow new concrete to cure for
    30 days before coating.
  • Previously Coated: Ensure that previously
coated surfaces are sound and in good condition. Featheredge the
terminal edge by sanding if some of the previous coating has been
removed. Conduct a test patch to ensure compatibility with the
    existing coating.

Application:

Before using, thoroughly mix the primer to ensure any settled
pigment is re-dispersed. In most cases, one coat is sufficient for
priming most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very
porous substrates, a second coat may be necessary. Spot priming is
recommended only under high-hiding topcoat paints. For best
results, prime the entire surface before painting.

The primer can be applied using a natural or synthetic bristle
brush, roller, pad, or sprayer. Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions when using spray equipment. For airless spraying, use
a .017 tip at 2000 to 2500 psi.

Thinning:

Do not thin the primer.

Clean-Up:

Clean up any spills or tools with soap and water. Dispose of all
waste material in a proper manner and in accordance with local
waste regulations. Consult local environmental regulations for the
appropriate method of disposal and/or recycling of paint and empty
containers.

PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION

ALL SURFACES: Remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt and chemical contaminants by washing the surface with Krud Kutter® Original Cleaner Degreaser, commercial detergent or other suitable cleaner. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to fully dry. If any mold or mildew is present on the surface clean further with one quart of household bleach added to a gallon of water. Rinse with clean water. Severely mildewed areas should be cleaned with a chlorinated cleansing powder and thoroughly rinsed with water. If the primer is going to be applied over a stained area, try to remove as much of the stain as possible by washing, sanding, or scraping. All surfaces must be dry at time of application.

STEEL: Hand tool (SSPC-SP-2) or power tool (SSPC-SP-3) clean to remove loose rust, mill scale, and deteriorated previous coatings. Abrasive blasting to a minimum Commercial Grade (SSPC-SP-6, NACE 3) with a 1-2 mil (25-50 ) surface profile is recommended for optimal performance. Abrasive blast cleaned steel requires two coats.

GALVANIZED STEEL: New galvanized steel should be solvent cleaned to remove all post galvanizing treatments such oil, grease, or wax. Old or existing galvanized steel should be thoroughly washed to remove all surface contaminates.
CONCRETE: Hand or power tool clean to remove all loose or unsound concrete, masonry, or previous coating. Very dense, non-porous concrete should be acid etched or abrasive blasted to remove the laitance layer and create a surface profile. Allow new concrete to cure for 30 days before coating.
PREVIOUSLY COATED: Previously coated surfaces must be sound and in good condition. If some of the previous coating has been removed, featheredge the terminal edge by sanding to form a smooth transition to the substrate. Universal Acrylic Primer is compatible with most coatings, but a test patch is suggested.
APPLICATION
Apply only when air, material, and surface temperatures are between 50-90ºF (10-32ºC) and the surface temperature is at least 5ºF (3ºC) above the dew point. The relative humidity should not be greater than 85%.
Mix thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed before using. In most cases only one coat is necessary to prime most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates a second coat may be necessary. Spot priming is recommended only under high-hiding topcoat paints. For best results, prime entire surface before painting. Apply with a natural or synthetic bristle brush, roller, pad or sprayer.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions when using spray equipment. Airless spraying, use a .017″ tip at 2000 to 2500 psi.
